Continue west along the peninsula. Fabulous views of Ocean Drive, Newport Cove, and the ledge “Old Soaker” will unfold. Do not try to descend to the many ocean caves along the cliff face. Several people, including well-trained and equipped technical climbers, have died in the attempt.

The most unusual geologic feature on this walk is Sand Beach. More than just sand, much of the beach is made up from billions of crushed bits of shells. During summer, swimmers enjoy the brisk 54-degree waters.

In 1911 the schooner Tay ran aground on Sand Beach, scattering its cargo of lumber. When winter waves carve the dunes at the back of the beach, the ribs of the vessel sometimes protrude.

Head north on the trail, which now traverses the remains of an old road, to return to the parking area or take a right at the trail intersection just south of the Sand Beach turnoff to cut back east across the head through a grove of young white birches. All vegetation on Great Head is still recovering from the aftereffects of the Great Fire of ’47, which blew itself out in a great, wind-whipped fireball that leapt from the head and extinguished itself out over the ocean.
